BAJA SHAKESPEARE AND BLUE MOON PRODUCTIONS PRESENT
STEEL MAGNOLIAS by Robert Harling
November 12 thru November 20, 2004
This November when the wind begins to blow and the snow birds and windsurfers arrive for the winter season, Baja Shakespeare is upping the ante for entertainment in Baja California Sur. After four years of presenting Shakespeare under the stars at Palmas de Cortez in Los Barriles, Baja Shakespeare, in conjunction with Blue Moon Productions, will offer its first non-Shakespearean production "STEEL MAGNOLIAS" (originally produced by the WPA Theatre, NYC, 1987).The director of this contemporary play is Isabel Smyth. Ms. Smyth recently produced and directed the VAGINA MONOLOGUES and hosts "Mad Wednesdays" musical entertainment events during the winter/spring season in Todos Santos when she is not acting/singing in the annual Shakespeare productions. She is currently working on an original screen play.
Under the direction of Ms. Smyth, a cast of six talented women will make the audience laugh, cry, and laugh again. The play takes place in the small Southern town of Chinquapin, Louisiana at Truvy's beauty salon, "the most successful shop in town". The beauty shop provides a place for the play's six characters, ranging in age from 19 to 66 +, to "let their hair down" as they deal with life's joys and tragedies, transitions and transformations with wit, intelligence, and the strength of friendship.
Like the past four productions of Shakespeare (MACBETH in 2001, A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM in 2002, THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSURF in 2003, and AS YOU LIKE IT in 2004), STEEL MAGNOLIAS will open in Los Barriles at Palmas de Cortez but in the more intimate setting of the new Convention Center. After two nights of dinner theatre (dinner at 6:00 pm and theater at 7:30) in Los Barriles, November 12th and 13th, the production will present one night (play only) in Todos Santos at the Marques de Leon Theatre on November 18th at 7:00 pm. Proceeds from ticket sales in Todos Santos will go towards the fund for new curtains in the historical theater. The fun continues in Cabo San Lucas that weekend at the Sea Queen restaurant, dinner at 6:00pm, show at 7:30pm. The following weekend , Nov. 19 & 20 will be in San Jose at a venue to be announced. (It is just being confirmed at this writing).
